IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization. It's a complex process where fertilization of an egg by sperm occurs outside the body, in a laboratory. This is a common form of assisted reproductive technology (ART) used to help couples overcome infertility.
The IVF Process: How does it work?
  • Ovulation Stimulation: Women are given fertility drugs to stimulate the production of multiple eggs.
  • Egg Retrieval: Eggs are extracted from the ovaries through a minor surgical procedure.
  • Fertilization: The eggs are combined with sperm in a laboratory dish.
  • Embryo Culture: Fertilized eggs (embryos) are allowed to develop for a few days.
  • Embryo Transfer: One or more embryos are transferred into the woman's uterus.
IVF-icsi
IVF-ICSI stands for In Vitro Fertilization with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection. It's a specialized form of IVF used primarily for couples facing male infertility issues.
Unlike traditional IVF where a large number of sperm are placed near an egg, hoping one will penetrate it, ICSI is a more direct approach. A single sperm is injected directly into the egg using a microscopic needle. This technique is particularly beneficial for men with:
  • Low sperm count
  • Poor sperm motility
  • Abnormal sperm shape
  • Obstructions in the male reproductive system
While ICSI is primarily used for male factor infertility, it can also be considered in cases of unexplained infertility or when previous IVF attempts have failed to result in fertilization. The IVF-ICSI process involves the same initial steps as regular IVF (ovulation stimulation, egg retrieval) followed by the specialized sperm injection and subsequent embryo transfer.
IUI
IUI stands for Intrauterine Insemination. It's a fertility treatment where prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. This bypasses the cervix, increasing the chance of sperm reaching the egg in the fallopian tube.
The IUI Process: How does it work?
  • Sperm preparation: A sperm sample is collected and prepared in a laboratory to concentrate the healthiest sperm.
  • Timing: The procedure is typically timed to coincide with a woman's ovulation.
  • Insertion: Using a thin catheter, the prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus. This bypasses the cervix, giving the sperm a better chance to reach the egg.
IUI can be an option for couples experiencing infertility due to, mild male factor infertility, cervical mucus issues, or unexplained infertility

Embryo freezing, also known as embryo cryopreservation, is a process where fertilized eggs (embryos) are frozen and stored for later use. IVF procedure often produces extra embryos. Freezing them allows for future attempts without going through another egg retrieval cycle.
Couples can choose to freeze embryos and transfer them at a later time, giving them flexibility in family planning. The freezing process involves using a special solution to protect the embryo from damage during freezing and thawing.
The Freezing Process
Embryos are frozen using a special technique called vitrification. This involves rapidly cooling the embryos to extremely low temperatures using a cryoprotectant to prevent ice crystal formation.
Thawing and Transfer
When ready to use the frozen embryos, they are thawed and then transferred to the woman's uterus in a procedure similar to a fresh embryo transfer.
service
A donor program in IVF involves using gametes (sperm or eggs) or embryos from a third party to help couples conceive. This is an option for individuals or couples facing infertility issues related to:
  • Egg quality or quantity: Women with premature ovarian failure, low egg count, or genetic disorders.
  • Sperm quality or quantity: Men with low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or genetic abnormalities.
  • Uterine factors: Women unable to carry a pregnancy due to uterine abnormalities or conditions.
  • Genetic diseases: Couples at risk of passing on a genetic disease.

Types of Donor Programs:

  • Egg Donation: An egg donor provides eggs, which are fertilized with the intended father's sperm.
  • Sperm Donation: A sperm donor provides sperm, which is used to fertilize the intended mother's eggs.
At TourWellSoon IVF donor programs are highly regulated to ensure ethical practices, anonymity, and legal considerations.
fertility-surgery
Fertility surgeries are surgical procedures aimed at correcting physical issues that can hinder conception. They are often used in conjunction with other fertility treatments.

Common types of fertility surgeries:

  • Laparoscopy: A minimally invasive procedure to diagnose and treat conditions like endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and blocked fallopian tubes.
  • Hysteroscopy: A procedure to examine the inside of the uterus to diagnose and treat issues like polyps or scar tissue
  • Myomectomy: Surgical removal of uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis Surgery: Removal or destruction of endometrial tissue outside the uterus.
  • Tubal Surgery: Repairing or removing damaged fallopian tubes.
  • Varicocele Surgery: Treatment for varicocele, a condition affecting the veins in the scrotum.

FAQs - IVF

What is IVF?
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a fertility treatment where eggs are fertilized by sperm outside the body, and the resulting embryos are implanted in the uterus for pregnancy.
Who needs IVF?
Couples facing infertility due to blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, male infertility, ovulation disorders, or unexplained infertility may consider IVF.
How successful is IVF?
Success rates vary based on factors like age, cause of infertility, and number of embryos transferred. While IVF has helped many, it's not guaranteed for everyone.
What is the cost of IVF treatment?
The factors that determine the cost of IVF are the geographic location of the clinic, multiple cycles or a single cycle, specific requirements for couples due to health conditions, medications, additional procedure requirements, etc.
Does IVF hurt?
The egg retrieval procedure requires sedation, but the embryo transfer is typically painless. Some women experience discomfort or bloating during the hormone treatment phase.
How many injections are required during IVF?
The need for injections depends on many factors, including age, weight, response to medications, and individual treatment plan, etc. Each individual's needs are different.
How Long does it take for an IVF procedure?
IVF lasts for 30 to 45 days in general and includes initial investigations, 10 to 14 days of ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, embryogenesis, transfer, and pregnancy test to confirm pregnancy. However, depending on the patient's condition and treatment protocol, the procedure may be divided into multiple steps and take longer than expected.
Can I freeze my eggs or embryos?
Yes, egg and embryo freezing (cryopreservation) are options to preserve fertility.
What happens after the embryo transfer?
You'll need to avoid strenuous activity and maintain a healthy lifestyle. A pregnancy test is usually done about 12 days after the transfer.
