IVF-ICSI stands for In Vitro Fertilization with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection. It's a specialized form of IVF used primarily for couples facing male infertility issues.
Unlike traditional IVF where a large number of sperm are placed near an egg, hoping one will penetrate it, ICSI is a more direct approach. A single sperm is injected directly into the egg using a microscopic needle. This technique is particularly beneficial for men with:
- Low sperm count
- Poor sperm motility
- Abnormal sperm shape
- Obstructions in the male reproductive system
While ICSI is primarily used for male factor infertility, it can also be considered in cases of unexplained infertility or when previous IVF attempts have failed to result in fertilization.
The IVF-ICSI process involves the same initial steps as regular IVF (ovulation stimulation, egg retrieval) followed by the specialized sperm injection and subsequent embryo transfer.
